Year One
The Formation of Islamic Theology
610–1328 CE
Students examine the emergence of theological thought from the Qur’an and Sunnah through the formative centuries of Islam. Topics include:
The Prophetic foundation of belief
The Companions and Successors
Early theological controversies
The rise of kalām
Muʿtazilism
Ashʿarism
Māturīdism
Atharism
Ibn Taymiyyah and the late classical period
The first year concludes with the thought and legacy of Ibn Taymiyyah.
Year Two
The Development of Islamic Theology
1328 CE–Present
Students explore how Islamic theology developed after Ibn Taymiyyah and how later scholars responded to changing intellectual, political, and social conditions.
Topics include:
Ottoman theological thought
Shah Walīullāh and reform
Modernist and revivalist movements
Contemporary theological debates
Authority and interpretation in the modern world
Tradition and change

Students may begin at any time and continue through the program as part of an ongoing course of study.
Overview
A two-year study of the formation and development of Islamic theology from the Prophetic period to the present day. Through close reading of primary sources and engagement with the major theological traditions of Islam, students explore how Muslims have understood belief, revelation, reason, and religious authority across fourteen centuries.

Certification
Successful completion of Year One leads to a Certificate in Islamic Theology. Successful completion of the full two-year program leads to a Diploma in Islamic Theology.
