Curriculum
Year One
The Five Sciences of the Qur’an
Students study the opening section of Fawz al-Kabīr, exploring the foundational sciences required for understanding the Qur’an and its interpretation.
Year Two
Advanced Hermeneutics
Students continue through the remaining chapters of Fawz al-Kabīr, examining language, interpretation, methodology, and the principles used by scholars to derive meaning from revelation.
Applied Tafsīr
In addition to the study of Fawz al-Kabīr, each class includes guided reading from the tafsīr tradition with special attention to Tawjīh al-Qirāʾāt. Students examine how variant readings shape meaning and how the scholars of tafsīr engage the qirāʾāt in their interpretation of the Qur’an.

Students may begin at any time and continue through the program as part of an ongoing course of study.
Overview
This program introduces students to the principles of Qur’anic interpretation and the major sciences that shape the understanding of revelation. Through guided study, discussion, and close reading of classical texts, students develop a deeper understanding of how Muslim scholars have approached the Qur’an throughout history.

Certification
Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion. Qualified students who complete the required course of study and demonstrate competency may be considered for ijāzah at the discretion of the instructor.
Why This Program?
This program is designed for students who wish to move beyond memorizing conclusions and learn how scholars think. Through close reading, discussion, and research, students develop the ability to analyze texts, evaluate arguments, and engage the tafsīr tradition with depth and intellectual rigour.
The goal is not merely to study interpretation, but to cultivate the habits of scholarly inquiry: careful reading, critical thinking, sound reasoning, and engagement with primary sources.
Unlike survey courses that focus primarily on the meanings of individual verses, this program focuses on the principles that govern interpretation itself. Students study hermeneutics through Fawz al-Kabīr while engaging the broader tafsīr tradition through applied readings and Tawjīh al-Qirāʾāt.
